Lady Ho Tung Hall, established in 1951, is the only female residential hall in the University of Hong Kong. The establishment of Lady Ho Tung Hall can be traced back to the Second World War when the University first accepted female students. In view of the lack of female residential halls in the University, Sir Robert Ho Tung donated one million Hong Kong dollars to the University to build a female residential hall which was then named in memory after his late wife Lady Margaret Ho Tung, who passed away in 1943. Lady Ho Tung Hall was established on 16 March 1951 at 91 Pokfulam Road. The daughter of Sir Robert Ho Tung, Dr Irene Ho Tung, was one of the very first female graduates from Lady Ho Tung Hall. Soon after the establishment of Lady Ho Tung Hall, female students joined into the pursuit of hall education as did their male counterparts. The establishment of Lady Ho Tung Hall signifies the new era when equal opportunity for the two sexes to enjoy tertiary education began in Hong Kong. After the extension of Lady Ho Tung Hall in the late 50's, she was able to accommodate a total of 104 female students with 34 graduates each year. Until the late 80s to the early 90s when the Hong Kong Government increased in a large scale the number of university places, the supply of residential hall places became significantly inadequate. In view of the situation, the University decided to redevelop Lady Ho Tung Hall. The original structure of Lady Ho Tung Hall was demolished in March 1998 and Lady Ho Tung Hall was temporarily changed into a non-residential hall. With the persistent request from the Lady Ho Tung Hall Students' Association and Lady Ho Tung Hall Graduates' Association, the University decided that one of the two new residential halls established at 91 Pokfulam Road would retain the name "Lady Ho Tung Hall" and would continue to be a female residential hall. The rebuilt Lady Ho Tung Hall was opened in April 2001. It accommodates 404 female students, almost four times the original. Despite the changes in the physical structure and the environment, Lady Ho Tung Hall continues to be one of the traditional halls of the University.
